Door hardware is usually chosen by look and bought by price, which is why so many doors drop, stick or fail to latch. The functional parts are the hinges and the latch, and they deserve more attention than the finish.
Levers, knobs and backset
Lever handles are easier to operate and suit accessible design; knobs suit period interiors. Check the backset, which is the distance from the door edge to the spindle, and the door thickness before ordering. Most latches are supplied for 35 to 45 mm doors.
Hinges carry the weight
A standard internal door needs two 76 mm ball bearing hinges. A solid fire door or an oversized door needs three 102 mm hinges rated for the weight. Fire doors require fire rated hinges and intumescent seals, and mixing components voids the rating.
Latch or lock
Passage sets have no locking function and suit hallways and closets. Privacy sets have a thumbturn and suit bathrooms. Keyed sets are for external doors. For a consistent look, keep the same finish and lever shape across the floor.
Finish and maintenance
Matt black and antique brass are the two most popular finishes, but both show fingerprints. Clean with a soft damp cloth only, because abrasive cleaners strip the lacquer and cause the finish to patch.
Our door hardware range covers lever sets, hinges, thumbturns and bathroom accessories in matching finishes.
