A toolbox full of gadgets still stalls when the basics are missing. These five tools cover the jobs that come up again and again, on site and at home.
1. A claw hammer
16 oz is the practical all round weight: heavy enough to drive a 75 mm nail, light enough to use overhead. Check that the claw is properly hardened, because a soft claw bends on the first stubborn nail.
2. A proper screwdriver set
Sizes matter more than brands. Look for hardened tips in Phillips PH1 to PH3, Pozi PZ1 to PZ3 and flat 3 to 6 mm, plus a stubby for tight spaces.
3. Three pairs of pliers
Combination pliers for gripping, long nose pliers for reaching into boxes, and side cutters for cable. A cheap pair that does not close flush will damage screw heads and nick conductors.
4. One good adjustable wrench
A 250 mm adjustable wrench replaces a drawer of cheap spanners for plumbing and general assembly. Check that the jaw does not slip under load before you buy.
5. A tape measure and a level
A 5 m tape with strong blade stand out and a 600 mm spirit level cover shelving, doors and tiling. Both are cheap to buy well and frustrating to buy badly.
